It was hard to believe when I found out that humans are able to talk to a computer online. It happened once in my pre-sessional English course in the University of Manchester. Having a chat with my tutor, he showed me the better way in learning with a computer. He explicated a specific point of CALL (Computer Assisted Language Learning) such as video centric avatar that can be used as our speaking partners.

By using keyword of video centric avatar, I find Alice1, Alice2, Cleverbot, Jabberwacky, Captain Kirk, Joan and Evi. They can be our online sitepal avatar for 24/7. Interestingly, they relentlessly speak English with us anytime as long as we have internet connection.

Alice will speak up and respond to our questions in any topics. In my experience, I mostly discuss about daily life situation such as weather, feelings and asking her opinions. It is just amazing that she responds my utterance precisely. However, The communication is only single way. We may have a nice chat if we start to write and raise some questions. She keeps her voice and waits for our questions and feedbacks. Thus, we must be active in having commucation with her.

On the other occasion, I start to observe more about video centric avatars. Finally, I find myself engage with Cleverbot and Jabberwacky in an intense conversation. To me, these two avatars provide something identical like Alice. Unfortunately, they communicate with us only in written forms. Therefore we cannot hear their voice to refer our pronunciation. Fortunately, these avatars will give us fruitful experience in practicing our speaking skills. We may have adequate time to rethink about 'what I should say, what vocabulary I should use, structure and grammatical construction etc'. In addition, we may edit and revise our sentences before we hit the Enter button to publish them.

On one hand, those three avatars are similar with Captain Kirk, Joan and Evi. All of them provide a chat box to publish our conversation in written forms. Moreover, they are relatively responsive to our utterance. On the other hand, Captain Kirk, Joan and Evi have better performance than those first three avatars. At least, there are three important points we should consider. First, there are head-shoot images of Captain Kirk, Joan and Evi. With such images, we may have the same feeling when we communicate with humans. Second, they respond our reply in written and oral forms. Thus, we can read and hear their responses in natural manner. Third, we will have two way communication. We sometime raise and responds some questions.

All in all, those six avatars are very beneficial in supporting our language development. You may have one of them if you are in one of such conditions; have no time to take English courses, feel doubt and reluctant to start conversation with real humans, have no perfect environment to speak English, want to have individual learning etc. Beside those benefits, they sometimes answers our questions in random. As result, the communication becomes inconvenient due to unrelated responses. This is one weakness of what we call 'the artificial intelligent avatars or cleverbots'. They sometimes do not speak properly as real  humans do. Basically, they will response based on the data bank in their programs.
